Breaking Down The White Goods Scheme, Step By Step

Across the UK, families are dealing with soaring energy costs. The LEAP Appliance Scheme is a White Goods Scheme, for those juggling the financial burden of outdated, inefficient appliances.

By providing energy-efficient white goods such as fridge-freezers, washing machines, and electric cookers to eligible homes, this initiative is pivotal in both reducing energy bills and encouraging sustainable living.

In this blog, we talk you through the five-step process of this life-changing programme. When you’re ready, apply to get started.

Why Is There A Scheme For White Goods?

Adopting energy-efficient appliances is more than just a positive environmental action; it significantly reduces energy bills and promises long-term savings, with less need for repairs. Essentially, it ensures your household runs more efficiently, economically, and with a reduced carbon footprint.

Am I Eligible For The White Goods Scheme?

The process begins with a LEAP Energy Advice Service telephone appointment, where eligibility depends on your current financial situation and the efficiency of your existing appliances. From there, appliance support is available to you if you reside in any of the UK regions that currently receive LEAP home visits (we will confirm on your energy advice call.)

The service is aimed at those receiving benefits or with a total annual household income of less than £31,000. Qualifying benefits are as follows:

  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Pension Guarantee Credit
  • Child Tax Credit / Working Tax Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Housing Benefit

The White Goods Scheme, Step-by-Step

Step 1 – Initial Application

The easy online form kickstarts your application, making the first step as seamless as possible and setting the stage for a personalised energy assessment. You can complete the form for yourself or on behalf of someone else.

Step 2 – LEAP Energy Advice Telephone Advice Appointment

This comprehensive home visit assesses not just your eligibility but how you can maximise your home’s energy efficiency. It’s advice tailored to your unique situation, presented with expertise by our fully qualified LEAP energy advisors.

Step 3 – Referral

Once deemed eligible, the referral process connects you with LEAP’s network, launching your journey towards more sustainable home appliances. This personalised care and support LEAP provides is all based around your living situation, your energy use and your family’s specific energy needs.

Step 4 – Delivery and Installation

Our delivery partners not only deliver but also install your new appliance, ensuring it’s properly set up for immediate use. Please note that the LEAP Appliance Service does not replace integrated appliances.

Step 5 – Follow-Up

We are on hand to help, should you need us. We will ask you to participate in a survey, ensuring every new appliance is running smoothly.

What types of appliances are available?

The scheme includes appliances such as fridges, freezers, fridge-freezers, washing machines, and electric cookers. Please note, gas appliances are not offered.

What happens on the day of replacement?

The delivery crew will require parking within sight of your property. The area for the new appliance should be clear, tidy, and meet specific installation requirements.

Are there any actions required from me?

Ensure the space for the new appliance is ready. For instance, washing machines should be within 1 metre of plumbing, and electric cookers need a certain setup for safe installation.

How is the replacement installed?

A professional installer will install the appliance, connect it, and make sure it’s fully operational. They’ll also dispose of your old appliance (unless it’s integrated and cannot be removed.) Please don’t throw your old appliance away! Our delivery partners will collect it so that it can be recycled.

The LEAP Appliance Scheme is a practical solution for vulnerable households, helping to alleviate financial strain through efficient energy use in the home. If you’re struggling with inefficient appliances at home, explore how LEAP can improve your living conditions.
