Why Fuel Poverty Day Matters
Fuel Poverty Day is an important reminder of the ongoing struggle many households face against rising energy costs. As we consider this day, it’s important to think about the difficult choices millions of people make to keep warm, stay fed, and maintain their well-being. With a recent 10% price cap increase on energy bills, approximately 6 million UK households are now estimated to be living in fuel poverty conditions this year.
How Has Fuel Poverty Changed in 2024?
The UK’s battle with fuel poverty has reached a crucial point in 2024. Recent findings from a survey by National Energy Action and YouGov reveal that 46% of adults are likely to ration their energy use this winter, and 27% have struggled to afford energy over the last year. 4% of people have even resorted to rationing essential medical equipment.
The hike in energy prices demonstrates the urgent need for solutions and support systems to protect vulnerable families from facing impossible choices between heating and other necessities.
What We’ve Done This Year to Help
In response to this crisis, over the past year, LEAP has significantly increased its reach, now serving 70% of the UK population across 211 local authorities. By working closely with local delivery partners, LEAP has managed to generate an estimated £52 million in energy bill savings for families nationwide.
This year, we introduced a Financial Assistance Scheme providing fuel vouchers up to £150 for those on prepayment meters
We extended our appliance scheme to include new products such as air fryers, heated airers, and dehumidifiers.
We introduced a 24-hour multilingual chat service to provide continuous support
We launched a Heating System Tune-Up Service and Boiler Repair Scheme (starting in the North West)
Additionally, we have expanded our energy advice service to include home visits in Somerset and South Wales, reaching more vulnerable families than ever before.
What You Can Do To Save Energy and Money At Home
Optimise Your Energy Use
Try switching to energy-efficient appliances and switch to LED lights. Timers and smart thermostats can also help bring your energy use down, saving you money.
Insulate Properly
Do you know if your home is properly insulated? Loft and cavity wall insulation can instantly reduce your heating costs, by reducing the amount of heat that leaves your house.
Reduce Energy Leakages
Seal drafts around windows and doors. Even minor efforts, like using draft excluders, can keep your home warmer for longer.
Mindful Cooking
Try more energy-efficient cooking methods. Microwaves, slow cookers, and air fryers consume less energy compared to traditional ovens.
Monitor Usage
Keep an eye on your energy consumption with a smart meter to understand when you are spending the most money, and learn to adopt some small but effective changes.
