If you’re on a prepayment meter and can’t afford to top up, a fuel voucher can provide short-term breathing space.

LEAP can issue fuel vouchers in Scotland for eligible households, worth up to £150.

Whether you’re eligible for fuel vouchers, the Scottish Boiler Scheme or home visits, the first step is always a free LEAP energy advice call.

When money is tight, it’s easy to feel like you’re one top-up away from going without heat or power. If you’re a Scotland resident and that’s your current situation, or you feel like you're at risk, LEAP has support available.

What are fuel vouchers and what do they do?

Fuel vouchers are designed for people on prepayment meters who are at risk of running out of credit. They’re a short-term emergency boost that helps you add credit to your gas or electricity meter when you can’t afford to top up.

LEAP fuel vouchers are usually sent as a code (by text/email/letter) that you can use to top up, depending on your meter type.

Can I apply for fuel vouchers in Scotland through LEAP?

Yes. LEAP’s Financial Assistance Scheme may be able to provide fuel vouchers of up to £150 for eligible households on prepayment meters, and delivery now includes Scotland.

Fuel vouchers are intended for people who are in a genuine fuel crisis, so there are eligibility checks. If you’re not sure, it’s still worth reaching out. LEAP can talk through your situation and help you understand what options you have.

What should I do first if I can’t top up?

Before you apply for vouchers, it’s always worth checking what your energy supplier can do right now. If you’re on prepay and struggling, ask your supplier about:

  • Friendly hours” credit (extra protection at certain times)
  • Extra support credit, and whether any repayments (for debt or emergency credit) can be set at an affordable level

If you’ve tried that and you’re still stuck, that’s where fuel vouchers may help.

How do I get help from LEAP in Scotland?

The first step is a LEAP energy advice call. This is the starting point, whether you’re asking about fuel vouchers, worried about a broken boiler or want to know if you can get a home visit.

During your call, a trained advisor can help you:

  • Understand your bills and make sure you’re on the right tariff
  • Check what emergency support you might be eligible for (including fuel vouchers)
  • Look for referrals for money/debt advice if you want it

To get started, you can apply online or call LEAP free on 0800 029 4543.

What other support is available in Scotland?

LEAP can support Scottish households in a few different ways, and your advisor can help you figure out what’s best for you.

Scottish Boiler Scheme

If you’re in a no-heat situation because your boiler is broken or condemned, LEAP may be able to help assess options for repair or replacement (eligibility applies.)

Home visits in Scotland (from May 2026)

In eligible Scottish regions, LEAP will offer home visits from May 2026 onwards. During a visit, a Home Energy Advisor can fit simple energy-saving measures and talk through practical ways to cut costs safely. Examples of these measures include draught-proofing, LED bulbs, radiator panels and standby saver plugs.

If you’re choosing between topping up and buying essentials, don’t wait until things reach crisis point. A quick conversation can help you feel more in control. If fuel vouchers are an appropriate step forward, LEAP will guide you through what to do next.
